Everyone was buzzing at CES 2018 when DJI announced its handheld camera gimbal, the Ronin-S. That was back in January. Four long months later, it's finally here. But as the saying goes, "It's always better to arrive late than to arrive ugly." Ladies and gentleman, the Ronin-S actually exists and is a thing of beauty.
Not to be confused with the Osmo Mobile, the Ronin-S is a single-handed DSLR or mirrorless camera gimbal for the videographer or vlogger who wants to step up from smartphones into the world of dedicated camera gear.
So, what better way to celebrate the Ronin-S's prolonged labor than to dive right in and see what you get right from the box.
In the Box
The DJI package designers have outdone themselves with the Ronin-S. The now DJI staple white card cover with a product picture covers the sturdy grey-foam Storage Case that lies within. Both sides are the embossed words DJI - Ronin-S and you'll find a handle on top so you can carry around like a briefcase. It looks and feels strong enough to stand on, though obviously, we recommend you don't. However, that does give you a sense of how safe and protected your new Ronin-S will be. Well done, packagers.
So, let's take a look at everything that comes in the box.
The first thing you'll notice is that the Ronin-S comes deconstructed with all parts and accessories in different placeholder compartments. Due to its detachable, modular design, the Ronin-S can be taken apart to fit in small or tight spaces, as is evidenced here.
Let's take a look at the full item list below.
The gimbal and battery grip are the main components of the Ronin-S and the camera mounting plate is what you'll use to secure the camera to it. We recommend using the lens support for all camera types.
The extended grip can be folded and either used as an extension of the handle for added handheld stability or unfolded, acting as a tripod for optimal static shots, Panoramas, and Timelapses.
The Focus Wheel controls the camera's focus.
